Perhaps it is time to set gender aside in our recordkeeping. If, as is proper, we are committed to equality, we need to ask ourselves why do we need to know what gender anyone is if it is irrelevant to any decisions we might make. And as for the 'bathroom' question: it's all a bit silly. Who is standing at the door asking each person going in if they really are the man or woman they are presenting as? One good solution I encountered over the summer was, instead of a communal bathroom, a corridor with lots of doors. Behind each door was a small room - a little larger than a regular bathroom stall - with a lavatory and a washbasin. You just went into the next available one, no matter which gender you were.
