So, why do these students sign up for "traditional" courses? The point of in-person activities is as much social and cultural as educational. If one is paying £25k+ then it makes sense to improve one's English, mix with a wide range of nationalities and make connections that could last into future careers. In my experience, it is difficult to get students to watch online lectures reliably before an in-person example class (which is naturally lecture captured), so attendance drops and the whole experience is degraded. Then, it should be no surprise that I marked the worst set of exam papers that I have seen in many years. If engagement was greater, I could solve many misunderstandings and fewer students would be sitting referred examinations.
