As an academic scientist myself, I am continually frustrated by the ill-informed rhetoric against the humanities. The range of skills students of subjects such as history acquire encompass so many of those that are needed in the current employment markets. These areas of study are also just as important as the sciences in enabling us to understand ourselves and our world.
Why should the study of humanity's past and present need to be justified in terms of 'skills', 'economic contribution', 'high earning careers' and having 'kept up with business'?
