Nihon University (Nichidai) is a private research university in Japan. Originally founded by Yamada Akiyoshi as the Nihon Law School in 1889, it is the largest university in Japan with over 70,000 students in attendance. The university is made up of 16 colleges and 87 departments, 20 postgraduate schools, one junior college which is composed of five departments, one correspondence division, 32 research institutes and three hospitals. Faculties include law, economics, commerce, art and science and technology among others. The main campuses are located in the Kantō region, in Tokyo and the surrounding areas. There are two more campuses in Shizuoka Prefecture and Fukushima Prefecture. In 2016, the university acquired the former Newcastle Court House in New South Wales Australia which became its first international campus.

Applicants should possess (i) a recognized undergraduate degree in Chinese Medicine registrable with the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong and a Ph.D. degree in Chinese Medicine or related disciplines; (ii) substantial experience in Chinese medicine clinical practice, teaching, as well as course development in tertiary institutions; (iii) a proven track record of high-quality research and scholarships in the discipline as measured by impactful publications, external grants obtained, supervision of research postgraduate students and cross-disciplinary collaborations; (iv) strong commitment to Chinese Medicine education, with interests in pursuing innovations in pedagogy and curriculum design; (v) proficiency in both Chinese and English.

The appointee will take part in healthcare services, teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, supervision of research postgraduate students, and academic research.  He/She is also expected to perform administrative duties.  Those with less experience may be considered for appointment as Assistant Professor.

The Taams lab is based in the Department of Inflammation Biology. We are located on the Guy’s Campus, in the Centre for Inflammation Biology and Cancer Immunology (CIBCI), adjacent to London Bridge in a vibrant part of London.

About the role

Do you have a solid background in immunology with a strong interest in translational research? Do you wish to broaden your horizon, support ongoing research, learn new technologies and join a friendly, ambitious and fun lab? Then this research assistant position may be of interest to you! 

We are looking for a Research Assistant to join the laboratory of Prof Leonie Taams at King’s College London. The successful candidate will offer high quality laboratory research support for a number of projects in the lab including a Wellcome Trust Collaborative Award-funded project, aimed at identifying the cellular and molecular drivers of pain and inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, the role holder will provide technical support for the processing of rheumatological samples (human blood, synovial fluid and synovial tissue samples) for ongoing studies in the Taams lab and our collaborators.

We are looking for someone with a good basic understanding of immunobiology, with an interest in applying their knowledge to the study of human inflammatory arthritis, and who has excellent organisational and technical skills. Previous experience in human blood and tissue sample processing, storage and recording is essential. Other essential criteria include demonstrable experience in human immune and/or stromal cell culture, cytokine detection assays, multi-parameter flow cytometry (e.g. Fortessa, Canto, CytoFlex) and molecular biology skills. The successful candidate will have knowledge of HTA and health and safety regulations. A proactive and problem-solving attitude, excellent data analysis and record keeping skills as well as strong interpersonal, communication and time management skills are essential.

This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 15 months.

Research staff at King’s are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development. 	A BSc degree in biology/immunology or related subject (awarded)
	A good basic understanding of immunobiology 
	Strong practical (i.e. lab-based) experience in a range of relevant immunological research skills including cellular and molecular biology techniques, e.g. cell culture, ELISA/Luminex, qPCR and /or western blotting 
	Experience in processing, storage and recording of human blood and tissue samples

About The Role

Applications are invited for a talented and enthusiastic postdoctoral scientist to join Professor Cathy Shanahan’s laboratory at the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine & Sciences of King's College London. The postholder will engage in internationally-leading research in the field of vascular calcification and take a role in determining the future path of this research. The post will involve data collection, analysis and report writing and attendance to present research findings and papers at internal academic meetings and external professional conferences. We are looking for a conscientious and committed member of the team who is willing to facilitate collaboration and networking to support the activities of the Shanahan group.

The post holder will report to Professor Cathy Shanahan and join an internationally recognised team of scientists focussing on understanding the role of smooth muscle cells in vascular calcification. Using both in vitro and in vivo model systems this project will identify key regulators of calcification and their targets and test whether novel therapeutics targeting these pathways can ameliorate calcification. The candidate should have experience in tissue culture, cell biology and data analysis and a keen interest in vascular research. Experience in spatial or single-cell transcriptomics and bioinformatics or high throughput screening is highly desirable. The successful candidate will join a research group within the BHF Centre of Research Excellence which provides an excellent highly multidisciplinary environment with state-of-theart equipment and facilities. The successful candidate will also be part of an International, LeDucq Network (COMET) focussed on discovery and translation in the field of vascular calcification.
