The group of Prof. Backus at the Institute of Physical Chemistry studies structure and dynamics of molecular processes. We apply static and time-resolved vibrational spectroscopic methods. To strengthen our team, we are looking for a PostDoc for 3 years. The position is dedicated to study with (time-resolved) sum frequency generation spectroscopy the structure and dynamics of water in contact with solid interfaces relevant for understanding catalytic processes. As such, active contribution to research is expected. Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement and supervision of students during research projects.

Forrest Research Foundation was established in 2014 following one of the largest ever philanthropic donations in Australian history by Andrew and Nicola Forrest. The donation is used to drive research and innovation capacity in Western Australia by awarding Forrest Scholarships and Fellowships to outstanding intellects from around the world to conduct research at one of Western Australia’s five universities.

About the opportunity

The Forrest Research Foundation is offering two prestigious two-year Creative Fellowships in 2026 to outstanding researchers and practitioners from around the world to conduct paradigm-shifting creative practice and research based at any of Western Australia’s five universities.

These generous fellowships provide a stipend and subsidised accommodation at Forrest Hall in a luxury self-contained studio apartment.


	Salary consistent with a Level A Step 8 appointment ($108,362 p.a.) plus 17% superannuation

Due to recent success in the competitive EU Horizon 2020 funding, we are seeking a Research Assistant to join the SWINS project team of Maynooth University.

The project, titled Sustainable Wellbeing through Investment in Social Services (SWINS), is a 36-month project funded by Horizon Europe and coordinated by PIN ARCO-University of Florence. SWINS will develop and test a policy-oriented toolbox for the ex-ante assessment of the economic and social returns of investments in social services over the life course. Focusing on the complementarity of services aimed at developing human capabilities throughout the lifespan, it will explore the impacts of alternative social policy scenarios entailing different social services configurations (from maternal care and ECEC, to education and ALMP, up to long-term care). SWINS will conceptualize the returns to social services in terms of income, employment, and growth, as well as bridge knowledge gaps about how these investments influence macroeconomic stability and foster the EU sustainability transition performances. By implementing a right-based social investment approach, SWINS aims to support the rethinking of social services as drivers of the EU’s shift towards sustainable wellbeing, going beyond their role as mere safeguards against the transition’s side effects.

We are looking to appoint a candidate to support the Lead Investigators, Prof. Delia Ferri and Dr Charles O’Sullivan, in conducting their research. The focus of the Research Assistant will be related in particular but not exclusively to Work Package (WP) 2 and 8 of the project. The researcher will conduct desk-based research on EU law and policy and relevant scholarship. For this position, we are looking to appoint a candidate with strong knowledge of EU law and policy and experience of interdisciplinary EU funded projects.

Salary

Research Assistant, Level I (2025): €33,292 – €34,545 p.a. (3 points)

Appointments will be made in accordance with public sector pay provisions.

for a fixed term period for the duration of 4 years, starting in January 2026 or as agreed.

The Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Science are looking for a shared researcher for the research action Diversity in Society and Life (DIVSOL). The task of the researcher is to study how AI as a transformative technology can support research on migration-related diversities and inequalities in contemporary societies. Relevant research areas include, but are not limited to, AI in the governance of migration, cross-border mobilities and transnational ties, work and services, institutional encounters, belonging, everyday lives and precarities as well as AI-related discrimination.

The position will also support strategic focus on the use of AI in social research. This includes, for instance, supporting the development of AI strategies for qualitative analysis.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The candidate is expected to carry out their own research within the scope, typically working in collaboration with existing research groups at the university. In addition, all recruited personnel will be part of a joint “AI Virtual Lab” activity for supporting use of AI in scientific research, as a university-wide mechanism for driving the AI transformation. The Lab will involve roughly ten researchers, four of whom will jointly develop AI in scientific research in the context of DIVSOL. The candidate will also interact with various support services, e.g., research software engineers.

In addition, the candidate will actively contribute to teaching and administrative tasks (up to 5% of their working time annually). It is possible to complete the teaching and administrative tasks through English.

QUALIFICATIONS  

An ideal applicant has:


	A doctoral degree in a suitable field for the work to be carried out. Research experience after completing the doctoral degree is expected.
	Scientific competence in developing artificial intelligence methods, with proven publication record in scientific venues in the field, as well as programming skills. Publications in top-tier AI and NLP venues (e.g. NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, JMLR, ACL, EMNLP, TACL) are considered a significant merit.
	Scientific interest and contributions in the given application domain, i.e., migration, inequality and diversity, again ideally with publications appearing in top-tier venues. Applicants with publications in a closely related field, but not exactly within the scope of the position, are asked to describe why their background is suitable for the position.
	Own scientific research interest in AI and/or the application domain. The scope of the methodological research is not specified by the call, but the candidates are expected to explain their own research interests and relate them to the specific topic of each position.
	Vision of what the role of AI is in the given application domain and an outline of planned research relating specifically to the use of AI in scientific research, for instance development of AI methods for commonly recurring tasks in the field, human-AI collaboration in scientific research, or development of open-source tools for AI4Science.
	Teaching skills.
	For Research Fellows (University Researchers), the ideal applicant has (in addition to the above listed requirements):
	A. Demonstration of other scholarly activity, such as evidence of independent research activity, the ability to lead a research group, activities in Finnish or international research groups or networks, and experience in the acquisition of research funding.
	B. Evidence of public engagement.

Duties  

The appointee will be required to:

(a)    conduct research into historical textiles leading to publications in refereed journals, a monograph placed with a prestigious publisher, or a body of design work whose outputs contribute to the knowledge and teaching of the textile/fashion design disciplines; 

(b)    collaborate with the Hong Kong Palace Museum and undertake research or other collaborative activities relevant to historical textiles; 

(c)    disseminate research findings through educational activities, such as presentations and exhibitions; 

(d)    provide quality teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level; and

(e)    perform any other duties as assigned by the Dean of Faculty and the Centre Director or their delegates. 

Qualifications

Applicants should:

(a)    have a PhD degree in a related discipline;

(b)    preferably have at least two years of postdoctoral research experience; 

(c)    have demonstrated promise of a high level of creative ability in research and teaching in some subdivisions of his/her field;

(d)    be familiar with different textile structures and the methodologies and sources of examining historical textiles; and

(e)    be highly proficient in written and spoken English and Chinese, both modern and literary.

Preference will be given to those with experience in examining textiles from imperial China.
