Good faculty take 'personal tutoring' seriously, know all about their students and support them in all aspects of their lives... irrespective of the colour of their skins. We're not supported enough in doing this, sometimes. I learned the art of good supportive tutoring working in a sixth form college (16-19 yo students) before slithering into academia but many of my colleagues, however well-meaning, have not had that training or experience. It's something we should be doing more of, so thank you for highlighting this aspect of student support.
