An issue with 'social media' is that few people appear inclined to engage in civilised debate and discussion. They state their opinions and get very upset - often abusive - if anyone has the temerity to offer a conflicting opinion, however well argued their position might be. All they seem to want to hear is people blindly agreeing with their views. It can get very depressing sometimes, and who wants to offer up an equally valid but different opinion when the likely response is a sustained and vicious personal attack, rather than a rebuttal of the opinion offered?
Maybe courses in classical rhetoric would help, with modern examples.
