this is an incredible piece of hyperbole that reads more as an exercise in cheerleading Meta's flagging dream than substantial academic debate as witnessed by the lack of evidence. As a project report it would earn a failing grade. AR and VR have uses training in domains where spatial relationships, e.g. surgery and engineering. Elsewhere evidence that interaction with"virtual tutors"improves learning is scant and at best difficult to measure. Beyond the question of what "presence" really means and whether the next range of expensive toys will provide it, generating content for 3D worlds is complex and expensive. To solve this the article proposes throwing in the snake oil of AI. Whilst some content generation will generate "something". Its unclear why we should trust such content to have the voracity needed for teaching the professionals of the next generation. They ma have more e sense and simply walk away from vendors boasting of their AI-powered virtual education tools. Ethicist heal thyself.
Why is THE allowing an advert for Meta in as its opinion of the day? How much did Meta pay?
Yes....the potential is exciting but why is this reading like an ad for Meta with no serious inclusion of the AI Ethics issues? The engineers designing most of these technologies have never been properly trained in AI Ethics!
