Women are not always, but often judged by how they look. And if you think that attractive women in academia are judged more favourably....think again.
I agree with Leona. Women are judge by their looks very often and disproportionally more than men. A lot of women who spend a lot of time make sure their outfit or hair (or whatever) is not in any way "sexy" or "attractive" in order to increase their chances of being taken seriously. If a women is successful and attractive what you usually hear is that her looks got her "that far".
