Thousands of international students from almost 100 countries around the world have chosen Semmelweis University in Budapest as the location of their studies, to become doctors, pharmacists or dentists. In 2022, the Hungarian university celebrates the 40th anniversary of teaching international students, who make up over one-third of the total students’ community at the institute.
Increasing the number of international PhD students is an important part of Semmelweis University’s strategy. The Doctoral Program covers the whole spectrum of medicine and health sciences, aiming to make degree opportunities more and more varied and flexible – adapting them to the different life situations of the students.
Semmelweis University provides health care in Budapest for refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine. In case Ukrainian patients have language difficulties at a clinic, the university’s Department of Languages for Specific Purposes offers 24-hour on-call interpretation in Ukrainian and Russian. The university also gives students, researchers, lecturers the opportunity to continue their work and studies in Hungarian, English or German. The university has collected donations and sent medicines to a Ukrainian hospital.
