attendance will be monitored - why???
Bluntly, visa requirements coupled with equality. In the UK, at least, students studying here on a visa are required to demonstrate that they are actually studying, the easiest albeit coarse way to do that is to record their attendance at class. For equality reasons you cannot single out the 'foreigners' for such attention, so everyone's attendance has to be monitored.
• Benjamin Tak Yuen Chan writing in Times Higher Education reports that the transition to online teaching in response to Covid-19 has precipitated a blizzard of advice from all corners of the globe. Concerns include how to measure #attendance. Some credible suggested alternatives include tracking student's progress in virtual learning environments such as Blackboard and Moodle. Is it time for academics to explore and change their #pedagogy? • #contact hours - Several institutions are already using synchronous and asynchronous online delivery to try an equate the right amount of contact hours with some successes. What can all learn from these models? • #Teaching quality will always be difficult to change and improve because some academics do not take part in peer reviews to learn from each other. • #Assessments - Students want to know what the assessment is and how to pass it! Online assessments in #highereducation are a practical way forward which would give the students more scope and markers less stress. • #studentsuccess - Whilst supporting the move to online delivery I do have significant reservations in terms of helping students currently in isolation and those who feel that they are at risk or not coping or have mental health issues.
