The recent shift of focus from science to research/enterprise/outreach/public engagement bunch of activities serves particularly well to those who is naturally accepted and trusted by public. Those who look and talk like a stereotypical scientist is more likely to be accepted by public. And someone who looks differently from the majority would need to go an extra mile to prove their credibility. Measuring PhD success on outreach rather than quality of research is a step against diversity in science.
