Putting aside the fact that Wansink is not doing research in the same sense as LIGO researcher, physical scientists devise theories and make measurements hoping for good agreement between the two over a wide range of experiments. The wider the range and the better the agreement the more likely the theory is a good explanation of the phenomenon.
