Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, has named Sir Tom Farmer, founder of the Kwik-Fit chain of garages, its founding chancellor.

Sir Tom, a devout Roman Catholic, was made a Knight of St Gregory, the highest honour the Catholic Church can bestow on a layperson.

He owns Hibernian Football Club, having saved it from extinction when its weak financial position risked "merger" with local rivals Hearts.
