Not sure how you decide who to interview about stories like this, but the 'former professor' you quote who opines that UCU has 'spectacularly misjudged the mood of members' clearly lacks knowledge of and/or insight into ballots and industrial action in universities. Despite the 50% threshold not being reached, this was still a significantly higher turnout than any past pay ballot and, far from strengthening the employer's resolve on pensions (how does he work that out?), is more likely to have just the opposite effect.
