One of the reasons why the business people on Australian universities' senior pay committees 'have a very unrealistic sense of what salaries should be in the higher education sector' is because Australian business bosses' pay has also increased disproportionately to that of their workers and that of their international counterparts. That is, Australian vice chancellor pay increases reflect increases in Australian business bosses' pay. Australian universities have indeed become more business like as both major parties sought in the 1990s.
I stick by the analysis done in 2013 (and quoted many times in the THE). The Australian market is way out of whack with the rest of the world but fundamentally the market does work.
