I don't think that young female academics should fear that their careers will be stifled. But I do agree that it would be useful to hear more stories about the many and varied ways in which real-life women do indeed manage to negotiate challenges and create academic careers for themselves. Two sets of stories I've been involved in producing are: * Academic Women Here! On being a female academic at the University of St Andrews (2018): PDF openly available at https://research-repository.st-andrews.ac.uk/handle/10023/12152 * Academic women now: experiences of mid-career academic women in Scotland (2016): PDF openly at https://research-repository.st-andrews.ac.uk/handle/10023/12224 These both contain women from all disciplines. Those in the sciences might also like the Royal Society's 'Parent, Carer, Scientist' (2016), from https://royalsociety.org/topics-policy/diversity-in-science/parent-carer-scientist/
