This has always been my problem with the utopian vision put forward for OA. There is also the possibility for those with extra personal resources to pay their own fees and thereby enhance their own standing in a way that has nothing to do with merit.
It's unfortunate. I would like to publish in open access journals but after doing the math [ http://snyderlab.com/2018/01/31/open-access-publishing-practicalities/ ] I quickly realized we cannot afford it. Best of both worlds, for the moment, might be to publish in closed journals but post the preprint for all to read.
