This is a valuable article on and important topic, as are the contributions of the five scholars to the related article “The Long View”. I notice, however, the absence of any mention of digital humanities in these articles. This new discipline is very much in the ascendancy and, together with complexity science, offers great hope for the future of the past. One way to help address the “challenges facing history” might be to address the “reluctance among some historians to engage with anyone outside their scholarly circle” and to embrace interdisciplinarity. Opening minds to the future can offer new ways to access the past.
