Academics teaching languages should ditch traditional learning models, delegates heard at a languages in higher education conference this week. Mike Kelly, director of the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies, said: "Universities work on the native speaker model a... model of learning that automatically produces failure."

It was suggested that students instead learn several languages to a less than native speaker level.
