Undergrads from poorer backgrounds are working for money a significant part of the time; they are effectively part-time learners. Those from middle-class (esp. upper-middle class) have no such financial anxiety and diversions; they are simply continuing their private-school education. Learners from poorer backgrounds have to abruptly switch on and off between learning and earning. It's discontinuous learning.
Sadly, nowadays HEI have become places where ruthless competition is being promoted instead of acceptance other people's reality and knowledge. Thus, at the end of the day, HEI are churning out more ignorant people than ever before.
