Mobility between social classes has declined during the past 30 years - partly due to the expansion of higher education, which "disproportionately favoured those from higher income backgrounds", says a paper published this week by the London School of Economics.
The paper from the Centre for Economic Performance concludes that UKchildren brought up in the 1960s had a better chance of moving into a higher income bracket in adult life than counterparts born in the 1970s.
