Canadian prime minister Jean Chrétien has inaugurated a brain tumour research centre at McGill University as part of the country's drive to be a world leader in the treatment of tumours of the nervous system. Meanwhile, France has launched a cancer commission headed by director-general of health Lucien Abenhaim to coordinate action to combat the disease through increased scientific collaboration.
