Fonda gives $12.5m to gender research
Actress Jane Fonda will donate $12.5 million (£8.5 million) to Harvard University’s school of education to create a research centre that will focus on the influence of gender on development and learning.

President of Columbia University George Rupp has told trustees that he will quit his job in summer 2002. L. Jay Oliva, president of New York University, has announced that he also plans to resign next year.

China's ministry of education is to cut the number of students admitted to university by recommendation from 20,000 to 5,000 a year. The ministry fears the system is being abused by faculty and local party officials.
