A typical first-year student living in a hall of residence will spend more than Pounds 5,200 a year on living expenses, according to a new book on student finance.

Renting a room in halls during term-time costs about Pounds 2,000 a year outside London. The next most expensive item is ubiquitous among students - the mobile phone, costing Pounds 720 a year.
