Duke opens centre for mathematical sciences

Cambridge University's chancellor, the Duke of Edinburgh, was to inaugurate the univer-sity's centre for mathematical sciences yesterday.

The state-of-the-art facility features architectural novelties such as glass tables for mathematicians to write on and a grass-covered dome on the main building.

Cosmologist Stephen Hawking (pictured above) is now based at the centre.
