Alan Thomson reports from the Liberal Democrat conference in Harrogate
The conference called for the full funding of the Bett committee recommendations on academic salaries and an independent pay review body.
Delegates voted overwhelmingly for a motion deploring the government's decision to wash its hands of the Bett report.
It also criticised overall spending plans for higher education as failing to offer the necessary investment in human capital in universities and colleges.
