Missing from your list of New Year Honours (THES, January 8) was that of the CMG to Hywel Ceri Jones, newly retired deputy director of the European Commission Social Affairs Directorate. It was he who in the 1980s put education on the map in the European Community. Erasmus, Lingua and other cooperation programmes that preceded Socrates and Leonardo are essentially his achievement.
