University of Southampton vice-chancellor Howard Newby (below) has called for a "technology transfer assessment exercise" to run alongside the research assessment exercise.
Professor Newby, former chief executive of the Economic and Social Research Council, said the exercise should be part of new incentives aimed at rewarding commercial application of research.
