Researchers at the University of Sussex have established why, on average, women get better degrees than men. "Our finding is that they do better because they work harder," Ruth Woodfield said.
The result comes from a pilot study of 265 students who started degrees in the school of sociological sciences in 1996. They were matched for 65 variables, including age, qualifications, school type and socioeconomic background.
