The Dearing report (www.leeds. ac.uk/educol/ ncihe/) has provoked a number of online discussions and responses. The Association for Learning Technology's lively one-day virtual conference is now read-only at cube.bioc. liv.ac.uk:8080/5/. Debate continues on Mailbase lists including ucisa-dearing, staff-development and seda, at www.mailbase. ac.uk.

There are reactions from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (www.hefce.ac.uk/new/ dearing.htm), the National Union of Students (www.nus.org.uk/dearnews. html) and the Staff and Educational Development Association (www.seda. demon.co.uk/ ncihe.html).

Others are listed at www.niss.ac.uk/education/ misc/dearing_responses.html.

Even the University of Waterloo Daily Bulletin, Ontario, Canada noted the Dearing report (www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/ bulletin/1997/jul/24th.html). The University of Manchester has responded at rylibweb. man.ac.uk/dearing.html.
