I hope that with its commitment to lifelong learning, the Labour government will set up a central focus for socialist and labour history resources, currently spread between the Modern Records Centre at Warwick, the University of North London, the Mechanics Institute in Manchester and others. An attempt to rescue these vital sources from the condescension of the academic establishment would really be a sign things are getting better.
