Distinguished as Chelly Halsey's career has been, John Honey (THES, May 9) erroneously accords him the achievement of being Britain's first professor of sociology. The first established chair of sociology in Britain, the Martin White, at the University of London (held at the London School of Economics and Political Science) was occupied by L. T. Hobhouse.
