Bryan Davies, Labour's spokesman on further and higher education, and Alan Howarth, the former Conservative minister who crossed the floor in 1995, have both been shortlisted, along with two others, for the safe Labour seat of Newport East. The winner will inherit a 1992 majority of just under 10,000.
