In my UG research methods module I teach students that "ethics" is mainly about institutions trying to protect themselves and reduce liability. That point was driven home for me recently when I completed our mandatory "ethics" training seminar: the first task there was to sign the register, so that it could be submitted to the university's insurance officer.
