Academics have condemned the Government's decision to halt the General Household Survey, which gives an annual snapshot of social, living and working arrangements in 10,000 households. The Office of National Statistics said it needed to reduce costs and will save Pounds 500,000 by not producing the 1997 edition. Many fear the 1996 survey will be the last.
