I applaud your recent coverage of South America, in particular Chile ("Protests lead to merger", THES, September 22). This fascinating continent tends to be little understood by foreign academics who would be astonished at the extent to which students will go and the suffering they will endure in their battles for justice compared with their American, Canadian or European colleagues.

As a medical student in 1970s Chile who actively participated in the struggles for a better academic environment, it is not without nostalgia that I recall my student days after reading of events in Santiago.
