"New Zealand’s top-ranked university has refuted claims that it abandoned its star Covid commentator to an online mob,..."- surely you mean 'denied', not 'refuted' ?> to deny means you allege it is false; to refute means you have proved it to be false. As this is an ongoing case, 'denied' is the correct word.
