Rock and a hard place ? A two year freeze on already frozen student fees which have been massively eroded by inflation. Then significant employer contributions to underpin the dire performance of USS pension schemes. Then a 12 month explosion in input costs - utilities tripling at least and materials and supplies escalating in prices way beyond inflation at 25-40% - what is being lost here is the significant impact on university finance that will bite hard in 2023/24. The literal demands of large flat rate pay increases will add tens of £millions to the pay bill per institution. For once the truth is, it’s not sustainable.
