During my 17 years as a student and a further 10 years as a Lecturer, the most important element for an academic to have is the ability to convey to the students academic and practical applications of the topic. If academics are teaching students, then an ability to communicate in an acceptable manner is important (not necessarily with formal teacher training), knowledge of the relevant academic articles, practical work experience in the topic, and the ability to engage with the student's learning processes i.e. answering student's questions in a proper fashion by propelling the thought process of the topic into relevant areas and situations. The combination of these factors makes a great learning experience.
I wonder if anyone has managed to make a survey comparing student satisfaction with training of the lecturer? Are students in fact happier on average with their teaching when the lecturer has had training?
My question is, when students said they thought teaching qualifications were important for their lecturers, did they actually know which of their lecturers had teaching qualifications?
