Oxford overtakes Imperial

Oxford University overtook Imperial College, London in the external research income stakes in 1999-2000. It is also ahead of Cambridge and University College London. Imperial's income from research grants and contracts rose after it acquired a medical school. A spokesperson for Oxford said its external research income rose by 10 per cent "more by an ever-growing recognition" that its research is globally competitive.
