The Indian government has stumped its critics by appointing Deepak Nayyara, a leftwing economist, vice-chancellor of Delhi University. This reverses the pattern of the past two years of placing pro-Hindutva people in key positions in academic institutions. The appointment is seen as a move by the government to silence its critics.
