Medical schools are expected to start publishing annual details of their admissions procedures next year, including a breakdown of applicants and admissions by ethnicity, writes Julia Hinde.

The guidelines agreed by the Council of Heads of Medical Schools mean medical schools will be obliged to publish statistics on applicants and those accepted, likely to include ethnicity of candidates, as well as age, sex and details of first degrees.

Procedures will be amended if they are shown to result in any unfair imbalance between successful and unsuccessful applicants.
