Buried the lead on this one. It doesn't state until the end the necessity to be first or last author in order to get promoted. Also the story doesn't explain how the REF works for these sorts of mutli discipline projects. It is a murky and opaque process about what department gets credit for the work or whether or not all departments involved get the credit. Until the REF and authorship rules are either made more clear or decoupled from career progression and REF departmental accountability, issues will persist in engagement.
