Your story about our research on the fate of Hungarian intellectuals who came to Britain after 1956 (THES, November 1) compressed part of a conversation to give an incorrect impression. The story said that Imre Lakatos had an important influence on debates within Marxism and the New Left; actually his influence was in the philosophy of science, while the two philosophers important in discussions on the Left are Istvan Meszaros and Miklos Krasso.
