Elaine Treharne, professor of medieval literature at Leicester University, has become the first woman to be elected as chair and president of the English Association. The association, which celebrates its centenary in 2006, is the principal professional body for the study of English in all educational fields. Professor Treharne is an expert in old and middle English.
