Oxford University has appointed its first female registrar since the office was established 550 years ago. Julie Maxton follows John Hood, the vice-chancellor, in being headhunted from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. She will succeed David Holmes when she leaves her current post as Auckland's dean of law in February next year.
