St Andrews University students are backing the institution's decision to award former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami an honorary degree next week, despite criticism from the National Union of Students and human rights groups.

There are claims that Iranian dissidents were jailed and tortured under his regime, and the NUS is protesting against the imprisonment of student Ahmad Batebi in 1999.
