A "patent-free playground" This may work for a limited range of technology, but is utterly unrealistic in many areas of biomedical research. In these areas, universities have no chance to take a drug all the way from discovery to clinical trial and manufacture. These processes potentially involve the investment of tens of millions of dollars, and without patent protection nobody would be foolish enough to provide that kind of money.
