Rowdy students in Leeds may face maximum penalties of five years in prison under proposals being discussed by the city council and residents' groups who have complained of noise, litter and crime resulting from the growth of student numbers.
The council is looking at a pilot scheme in Canterbury, which has been hailed a great success. Under the scheme, the police, university and the council have the power to issue warnings to students guilty of antisocial behaviour. After two incidents, law breakers will face either a fine or a custodial sentence.
